In nonprofit fundraising, the board, CEO, and staff have distinct, interconnected roles that contribute to the success of the organization's fundraising efforts. Here’s an overview of their responsibilities:

1. Board of Directors

The board has a governance and strategic role in fundraising. Their responsibilities include:

  • Setting fundraising goals: Boards ensure that the organization has clear fundraising objectives aligned with its mission and strategic plan.

  • Donating: Board members should personally contribute to the organization. Many organizations have a "give or get" policy, where members either donate or secure donations from others.

  • Opening doors: Board members leverage their networks to introduce potential donors, partners, and funders.

  • Oversight: The board ensures that the fundraising plan is ethical, efficient, and aligned with the mission. They oversee the overall financial health, which includes approving fundraising budgets and strategies.

  • Advocacy: Members act as ambassadors, raising awareness of the organization's mission and its need for funds.

2. CEO/Executive Director

The CEO has a leadership role in fundraising, guiding strategy and implementation. Responsibilities include:

  • Fundraising leadership: The CEO is the face of the organization in donor relations, building relationships with donors, foundations, and key stakeholders.

  • Strategic planning: They shape the organization’s fundraising strategy, ensuring that it aligns with the overall mission and goals.

  • Partnerships: The CEO collaborates with board members and staff, setting a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

  • Donor engagement: The CEO has direct interactions with donors, fostering relationships that may lead to significant gifts.

  • Reporting: The CEO provides the board with updates on fundraising progress, challenges, and opportunities.

3. Staff

Nonprofit staff, particularly those dedicated to fundraising, handle day-to-day implementation of fundraising strategies. Key roles include:

  • Development staff: These team members are directly responsible for managing fundraising campaigns, writing grant proposals, donor cultivation, and event planning.

  • Communications team: Often tasked with crafting the messaging, marketing materials, and social media outreach to support fundraising efforts.

  • Donor relations: Staff ensure stewardship of donors by maintaining donor databases, sending thank you letters, and providing updates on the impact of contributions.

  • Event coordinators: They manage fundraising events, ensuring they are well-organized and effective in raising funds.

  • Grant writers: They focus on securing funding from foundations and government agencies by writing and submitting proposals.

Collaboration

All three groups must work in concert to create a culture of philanthropy that permeates the entire organization.
